Prepare

Suggestions on how to make the most of your headshot session.

  • Plan: Read Looks and Casting. Talk to your agents, teachers and industry friends. Ask others for ideas.
  • Collaborate: If you like we can schedule a meeting or talk on the phone. Together we can discuss your objectives for the shoot. It is most important to us that you are comfortable and that we are all clear about what you want to achieve.
  • Tanning: If you must do this avoid 'spray' or 'self-tanning' products. They tend to leave a noticeable build-up in unusual areas of the face. Avoid the sun or using a tanning bed for at least 3-4 days before the shoot. A sunburn is very difficult to remove with retouching and never looks good in headshots. Remember you want to look like you do when you show up at the audition.
  • Hair Color/Cut: Try to schedule this a week or so in advance as cuts can take time to grow out and color needs time to set and can sometimes leave a temporary mild stain on the scalp. Avoid trying 'new' cuts right before a shoot - you want to make sure the look you're shooting i15 the one you're going to be happy using for the next year (at least.)
  • Pack: Use the checklist page to help in deciding what to bring.
  • 24hr break: Avoid drugs, alcohol, partying, and excessive salt or sugar for at least 24 hours before the shoot. This is important, it can show.
  • Sleep: Get plenty of sleep the night before.
  • Eat: Eat something before the shoot, hunger can be a distraction.
  • Make-up: Arrive with a clean face and simple hair for the make-up artist.
  • Slow down: Leave plenty of time before and after. Take the time to organize your wardrobe, iron and pack. ...avoid rushing so you arrive calm.
